3 Steps to Setting Goals for 2017 (part 1)

At the start of every coaching relationship, I sit with my clients and set goals for our coaching programme. Specific, measurable goals that will help them stay on track and keep motivated to make the changes they want to see. Personal goals, they create for themselves and are ultimately, held accountable for.

In this three-part blog I want to share with you the three main steps to setting realistic, achievable goals. Especially apt at the end of a year, with a fresh start around the corner. Now is the perfect to time to start thinking about 2017 – what you want to achieve, who you want to be and what you’ll create. An ideal time to sculpt the life you’ve always dreamt of.

Before you set any goals or targets, it’s important to have a good understanding of your current situation or where you are now.

Who are you? What do you spend most of your time doing, thinking, feeling? What’s your relationship like with money and having fun? How happy are you with the different areas of your life?

A great assessment tool for this is the Wheel of Life found belowWork through each segment of the circle, rating each area by how satisfied you are with it at the moment (10 –couldn’t get any better, 0 –utterly miserable) and shading from the centre up to that mark.

Once you’ve completed each segment, take a step back and look at the ‘wheel of your life’. What do you notice? How smooth is the ride? How balanced? Which areas do you think need refining or the most improvement?

This is a great place to start breaking down the areas you might want to change or set goals around. There are usually 3 or 4 problem areas that arise, sometimes more. So perhaps start with the most important and see how you get on.

N.B Your physical environment usually includes home life and surroundings, and personal growth can cover religion and spirituality. Health should include your energy levels.

Next week we’ll be using visualisation techniques to figure out exactly where you want to be this time in 12 months. Read it here.
